Audience Explorer: Validate LinkedIn Targeting Before Launch
Audience Explorer lets you compose LinkedIn targeting criteria and receive estimated audience size with demographic breakdowns. Learn the difference between facet mode and segment mode, why facet mode requires a location, and what counts as a qualifying audience.
Audience Explorer helps you test LinkedIn targeting before committing budget. Use the Visual Query Builder to compose include and exclude criteria, then run a query to receive audience size estimates and breakdowns by facets such as job function, industry, seniority, and company size. The last result per ad account is saved automatically so you can return to it without re-running.

Two Modes: Facet and Segment
Facet mode lets you build targeting from scratch using LinkedIn facets. It runs one LinkedIn API call per requested breakdown facet and resolves the returned identifiers to readable labels. Segment mode analyzes LinkedIn DMP segments already stored for your ad account. It does not require you to compose new criteria from scratch and does not require geographic targeting.
The Location Requirement in Facet Mode
When using facet mode, your targeting criteria must include a location plus at least one additional attribute that is not age, gender, or language. LinkedIn requires geographic targeting before returning audience breakdown data in this mode. If you submit criteria without a location, or with only age, gender, and language attributes alongside a location, the query will not return breakdowns. Segment mode does not have this restriction.
Capabilities
- Build include and exclude criteria across up to 15 facets
- Receive audience size estimates and per-facet breakdowns with 5 to 100 results per facet
- Facet results resolve LinkedIn identifiers to readable labels such as job titles and industry names
- Segment mode analyzes stored DMP segments without requiring geographic targeting
- The last result per ad account is cached and persisted for future visits
Honest Limitations
- Audiences smaller than approximately 300 people return no breakdown data; LinkedIn suppresses results for small audiences
- Facet mode requires a location plus at least one non-age, non-gender, non-language attribute
- Segment mode only accepts segments already synced for the selected ad account
- Return counts per facet are capped between 5 and 100 by the LinkedIn API
- Audience Explorer is included on the Growth plan and above
